The Binding of Isaac
Handmade storytelling rug of the Mountain Jews of Azerbaijan
Size: 1.6m x 1.2m | Material: Premium lambswool, natural dyes | Detail: 50,000 knots per 10 cm2
This unique textile artwork brings to life the biblical narrative of The Binding of Isaac (Genesis 22), interpreted through the artistic traditions of the Mountain Jews of Azerbaijan—a community known for merging Jewish heritage with the visual language of the Caucasus.
Handwoven in Azerbaijan using premium lambswool and natural dyes, the rug features three narrative panels: Abraham’s test of faith, Isaac’s willing participation, and the meeting of Rebeccah and Eliezer at the well—symbolizing the continuation of the covenant.
The composition draws on local aesthetic traditions, including regional dress, symbolic objects, and architectural motifs referencing Qırmızı Qəsəbə, the historic Jewish settlement near Quba. Rosette motifs and Stars of David, drawn from ancient Jewish decorative traditions, frame the design—linking it to a broader Sephardic and Mizrahi visual legacy.
Meticulously crafted, this piece stands as both a striking work of art and a tribute to a distinctive chapter in Jewish diasporic history.
